Coffee and Your Health: Pros and Cons

The amount of conflicting information on whether or not coffee is good or bad for you can be dizzying. Of course, most of us would like to be able to have our morning cup of coffee without guilt, so it might be nice to hear about a recent study conducted on coffee—the results are favorable. A study published in the journal Nature Medicine found that older participants who drank coffee and other caffeinated beverages displayed lower activity in inflammatory gene clusters than those who didn’t. Inflammation is usually the main culprit for age-associated chronic diseases. The good news is, people who drank more than five cups a day showed the least signs of inflammation in their blood. This doesn’t seem to be the only benefit, as the study participants also seemed to show lower rates of high blood pressure, free radical activity, and stiff arteries, a risk factor that plays into cardiovascular disease. This information shouldn’t be taken as a license to overdo it, though, because an overindulgence in caffeine, especially when your body’s not used to it, can lead to serious health concerns such as heart palpitations, gastrointestinal issues, and insomnia. Read more…
